With Alistair Overeem out of the picture to face JDS at UFC 160, due to a torn hamstring. The UFC has decided that Mark Hunt will take the big mans place at UFC 160 on May 25th. The event, which takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV will be headlined by Cain Velasquez vs Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva. This will be Cain’s first title defense since regaining the belt by defeating Junior Dos Santos in their second fight.
Junior dos Santos vs Mark Hunt really poses some interesting questions for the heavyweight division including whether or not the winner of the fight will get to meet the champion at the next title fight or whether there are more matchups that need to be made before determining a clear number one contender. Either way the fights at UFC 160 are already looking like some seriously intriguing matches.
The UFC has let go of one of their truly entertaining veterans, in the always exciting Jon Fitch. According to an article at MMAWeekly the UFC President Dana White stated, “We have 470-something guys under contract,” The UFC President explained. “We have over 100 guys too many on the roster right now. The blood has not all been spilled yet.” White went on to explain that Fitch’s best days have passed and he couldn’t justify the cost to keep him on the payroll. Fitch, however, seemed to have little trouble securing a position with another MMA venue named World Series of Fighting.
It makes one wonder though, whether these recent cutbacks will play in the minds of fighters in future bouts. Is it likely that prelims will become the sort of places where fighters not only compete to reach the top but also fight to keep their jobs? Many questions abound for fighters and MMA fans alike but perhaps these cutbacks will trim the fat off of the organization and motivate combatants to new heights.

That’s the buzz on the web today. Alistair Overeem apparently sustained an injury during training that is yet to be disclosed, according to an article on MMAFighting.
This marks the second cancellation of a match between these two heavyweights. The first, which was scheduled back in May at UFC 146, Overeem was not cleared by the Nevada State Athletic Commision after failing to clear a pre-fight drug screen.
The UFC has made no word yet as to who will replace Overeem or whether JDS will remain on the card. This is bad news for mma fans who were excited to see this heavyweight bout with major contension implications.
